What is Kiwix?
Kiwix is a nonprofit organization that makes free knowledge accessible offline through open-source software and innovative compression technology. It delivers Wikipedia, Project Gutenberg books, and other educational resources to places where the internet cannot reach, including remote villages, refugee camps, submarines and aircraft carriers.
Why does offline access matter?
Over 50% of the world's population lacks reliable internet access due to cost, lack of infrastructure, or censorship. This creates barriers to education, development and freedom. Offline access solutions allow people to access knowledge regardless of their internet connectivity.
Is Kiwix a for-profit company?
No, Kiwix is a not-for-profit organization. Most of their revenue comes from donations. They do not display ads or collect personal data.
Where is Kiwix located?
Kiwix is located in Lausanne, Switzerland. Its team, volunteers, board members and users are worldwide.
How did Kiwix start?
In 2006, two people on different continents independently developed the idea to make Wikipedia accessible offline. Renaud Gaudin in Bamako, Mali developed an offline Wikipedia reader for remote areas, while Emmanuel Engelhart created an offline version of Wikipedia and developed openZIM, an open-source compression system. They joined forces in 2007 and built a global community around the mission to make knowledge accessible to everyone, everywhere.
